Police continued their search for a missing Polish tourist and his friend today on December 13 amid fading hopes they will be found alive.
Mateusz Juszkiewiez, 27, and his Thai female friend Veerakarn Sirivipakorn, 23, rented a kayak from Yanui beach in Phuket, on Saturday December 7 afternoon.
The haunting last picture of them, taken by another tourist in the same group who also rented kayaks, shows the two young people in a blue kayak with orange life jackets on as they look out over the sea.
The other friends, six in total split between three boats, returned after a couple of hours but the missing pair were blown away from the shore by wind and strong currents before phoning for help then losing contact.
Local fishermen, tour guides and police immediately began searching but were unable to find any trace of the missing people.
Rescue workers have been searching by air and boat all week but there is still no sign of the kayak or the couple.
The devastated mother of Veerakarn, Chudarasa said that she last talked to her daughter moments before she rowed out into the sea.
She said: “We talked over the phone around noon before she went out into the sea and went missing. It has been terrible for me, not knowing where she is. I am praying every day that she is alive.”
Today (13/12) is the sixth consecutive day of the search for the two tourists, after the last five days with no trace of them.
A Phuket tourist police spokesman said: “This week there has been 18 air searches, 34 sea searches and another 50 land searches but we still cannot find any trace of the missing people.”However, as long as they still be missing the search should be continued and if any people have any information, then please contact us.”
