Construction work on a large new bar complex opening on Sukhumvit Soi 7. This place will be housing a lot of the bars that are being turfed out of the Queens Park Pool Plaza on Sukhumvit Soi 22 now the landowner has decided to sell up. Expect a big new hotel there. However, most of the girlie bars are re-locating and many will move to the deceptively large, new complex on lower Sukhumvit road. Sure, it’s not as big as the Queens Park Plaza outfit but there are plenty of bars deeper in the labyrinth. They all seem to be much smaller, with no room for pool tables, though.
As can be seen in the video, the sign for Rumours bar is out front. This video was filmed on November 17 and work was well under way. The structures are all finished and most bars seem to be waiting for the final furnishings to be added. According to the popular nightlife blogger Stickboy, the rents for the bigger units at the front of the bar complex are commanding some pretty high rents in the region of 240,000 baht a month. While the monthly rents for the smallest ‘shoe box’ bars start at 25,000 baht a month. All quite expensive, especially at a time when most girly bar businesses are struggling.
Given the ongoing development and ‘gentrification’ of Sukhumvit, this new beer complex seems slightly out of place. It appears to be very ‘Pattaya-esque’ with its tin roofs and cheap structures. Generally, it’s going in the opposite direction of Bangkok as a whole. So for all of these reasons, it could struggle.
