This was the moment dozens of African hookers were rounded up for working illegally in Bangkok.
More than eighty of the black girls were marched to the police station after officers swooped on the areas around Soi 4.
This part of Sukhumvit Road has become something of a haven for African prostitutes, which we detail in guide to whether African hookers in Bangkok are worth trying.
Seventeen of the girls were charged with visa offences and are likely to be sent back to their homelands. Many of the girls were from Uganda, but others were also from Ghana, Zimbabwe and Kenya.
The raid was carried out after complaints from residents and businesses in the area about the presence of the African hookers.
Complaints about black prostitutes in Bangkok are also common among the expat community.
That’s not to say African prostitutes aren’t safe here in Thailand. There are very few stories of African girls stealing or causing violence, though STDs are obviously something to look out for.
Most of the complaints were actually related to them being overly-aggressive in their hunt for customers. Or the apparent links to pimps and traffickers who are also connected with drug dealing in the area.
A few arrests of the girls isn’t going to eliminate the flow of African tars into Bangkok, or the problems associated with them.
It’s mostly a show of strength from the army and police who are keen to be seen to doing something about the issue.
”We have received complaints from both residents and foreign tourists that there was prostitution and black people plotting criminal acts in the area,” Surachet Hakpan, head of the 191 emergency response unit, told Khaosod English.
”They caused a nuisance to people in the area.”
